The Roaring
Charleston

Exuberant, kicky, and pure vintage energy. Charleston captures the free-spirited spirit of the 1920s — arms swinging, feet flying, and a smile you simply can't help wearing from the very first step.

About the Style

What is the Charleston?

Charleston burst onto the American scene in the early 1920s, named for the city in South Carolina where its distinctive rhythms originated. It became the defining dance of the Jazz Age — high knees, kicking feet, and a relentless energy that perfectly captured the spirit of the Roaring Twenties.

At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach both solo Charleston (the classic 20s style) and partnered Charleston (which blends beautifully with Lindy Hop). The solo version is a great way to build musicality and confidence; the partnered version opens up a whole new creative vocabulary alongside your swing dancing.

Charleston is one of those dances that's impossible to do without smiling. The footwork is infectious, the music is irresistible, and once you start, you'll be finding excuses to do it anywhere there's a good beat.
