Infectious, earthy, and joyfully social. Cumbia's rolling rhythm is one of Latin America's most beloved dances — a grounded, rotating style that feels like a full-floor celebration with every single step.
About the Style
Cumbia is a Colombian dance style with African and indigenous roots that has spread across Latin America and beyond to become one of the most widely danced rhythms in the Western Hemisphere. Its characteristic side-to-side step with a hip sway and skip gives it an unmistakable feel that works across a huge range of Latin music — from traditional Colombian cumbia to modern Mexican regional and Latin pop.
At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach Cumbia as a social partner dance with an emphasis on the basic footwork, partner connection, and the natural, relaxed style that makes it feel so at home in a club or backyard setting. If you go to Latin social events in DFW, this dance comes up constantly.
Cumbia is practical Latin dancing. It's easy to learn, incredibly versatile, and it shows up in almost every Latin social context in the United States — particularly in Texas, where the cumbia tradition runs deep. Once you have it, you'll use it everywhere.
