Fast, spinning, and breathtakingly elegant. Viennese Waltz is the original ballroom dance — a continuous, sweeping rotation around the floor that feels like flying once the rotation and the music finally lock together.
About the Style
Viennese Waltz is the original Waltz — the fast, sweeping version that dominated European ballrooms in the 19th century. Danced at roughly twice the tempo of the standard Waltz, it's defined by continuous rotating turns and a breathtaking sense of speed and momentum that few other dances can match.
At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach Viennese Waltz as a progression from the standard Waltz, with a focus on the natural and reverse turns, the change steps, and the rotational technique that makes this dance so distinctive. The key is learning to let the rotation work for you rather than forcing it.
There is nothing quite like Viennese Waltz. When the music is right and the rotation is smooth, it feels almost effortless — like the room is spinning around you while you stay perfectly still. It's one of the most exhilarating experiences in all of ballroom dance.
