Smooth, elegant, and timelessly classy. The Foxtrot glides across the floor with a slow-slow-quick-quick rhythm that makes it one of the most versatile and deeply satisfying ballroom dances you'll ever learn.
About the Style
Foxtrot is one of the most elegant and versatile dances in the ballroom repertoire. It emerged in the United States around 1914, named — by popular legend — after the vaudeville performer Harry Fox. Its smooth, gliding quality and consistent tempo make it one of the most useful dances a social dancer can have in their toolkit.
At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach American-style Foxtrot — smooth, progressive, and built for real social dancing. The basic walking movements feel natural almost immediately, and the style works with an incredibly wide range of music, from big band to contemporary pop.
Foxtrot is often called the most practical ballroom dance to know. Once you have it, you'll use it at weddings, galas, dinner dances, and anywhere else music is playing and there's room to move. It's the dance that never goes out of style.
