Smooth, musical, and endlessly adaptable. West Coast Swing works on virtually any genre — blues, hip-hop, pop, country — making it one of the most versatile and deeply rewarding partner dances in the world.
About the Style
West Coast Swing evolved from the Lindy Hop in the 1940s on the West Coast of the United States. Unlike most swing dances, it's danced in a slot — a narrow rectangular pathway — making it ideal for smaller floors and more intimate partner connections. Today it's danced to an enormous range of music: blues, pop, contemporary, even hip-hop.
At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach WCS as a creative, improvisational dance where the leader proposes and the follower interprets. The musicality and playfulness built into this dance make it endlessly rewarding — no two dances are ever quite the same.
West Coast Swing is one of the most versatile social dances you can learn. Once you have the basics, you can dance it to almost anything playing at a club or wedding — and you'll spend years discovering new ways to express yourself within the same fundamental framework.
