About the Style

What is Salsa?

Salsa is a lively partner dance rooted in Afro-Cuban rhythms, brought to the United States through New York City's Latin communities in the 1960s and 70s. Today it's one of the most widely danced social dances in the world — from outdoor plazas in Havana to clubs in Dallas.

The basic step follows a distinctive quick-quick-slow pattern in 4/4 time. At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach LA-style Salsa — danced "On1," slot-based, and built for social dancing with any partner at any event.

Salsa is energetic and expressive, but the fundamentals are surprisingly approachable. Once you have the basic step, you can dance with virtually anyone at any social — that's what makes it so addictive.
