Simple, infectious, and the perfect introduction to Latin dancing. Merengue's steady march rhythm makes it immediately accessible to everyone — yet the hip motion, partnering, and musicality keep it endlessly fun.
About the Style
Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic, known for its simple marching-style footwork and upbeat 2/4 rhythm. It's often the first Latin dance beginners learn — and that accessibility is one of its greatest strengths.
Don't mistake simple for boring. Merengue's basic step takes about five minutes to pick up, but the partner work, turns, and body movement that follow give you a lifetime of things to explore. At DFW Social Dance Studio, we teach Merengue as both a starting point for new dancers and a foundational style for those building their Latin dance vocabulary.
Because the footwork is so accessible, Merengue is one of the best dances for learning how to lead and follow, connect with a partner, and feel the music — the building blocks that carry into every other dance you learn.
